The terminology for identifying patients with CRI varies greatly between specialties. The National Kidney Foundation and its Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI™) Guidelines (often referred to simply as “The KDOQI™ Guidelines”) refer to these patients as having chronic kidney disease (CKD), while others refer to them as having chronic renal insufficiency (CRI), or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in more severe cases. CKD, CRI, and ESRD all refer to kidney disease.
